The latest addition to the Hitachi family has finally broken through that magic 999Gb Mark, with the introduction of a 1Tb Hard drive in a single unit. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000, as well as being the only hard drive available today that is 1Tb, has a 32Mb cache again a milestone that is unrivalled by its predecessors, and it is Hitachi's first 3.5" drive to implement perpendicular magnetic recording technology (PMR). To break into the realms of the Tb mark, Hitachi have used a 5platter configuration. Because of the introduction of the PMR technology, each platter holds 200Gb, although the PMR is easily capable of achieving much higher storage, we see Hitachi are being conservative, while they develop the technology further. “Many small and mid-sized businesses are consolidating their storage environments to improve manageability and accelerate data backup and recovery,” said Tom Cahill, director of product management at CDW Corporation, a leading provider of technology products and services to businesses, government and education. “Hitachi’s terabyte-capacity drive offers organizations an affordable new option to accomplish these goals while helping them to respond to increasing data management requirements.”
